The Golden Mile and its Origins

The Golden Mile is Marbellas most well-known area and the starting point for the real estate boom that took over this small fishing village and has helped it grow for over 50 years. Located to the west of the old town connecting with the marina of Puerto Banus, the Golden Mile offers a selection of Marbellas best urbanizations/developments. Luxury can be seen all over from beachside urbanizations and impressive villas to the mountain areas with a private and quiet environment just 10 minutes from the town center.

Every story has a beginning and the most exclusive and sunny town in southern Europe began with a story worth of the luxury ideal that it portrays. Its ideal location and pleasant microclimate created by its proximity to the ‘La Concha’ mountain were sufficient reasons to attract a privileged clientele in the ‘50s. First to arrive was the Marquis of Ivanrey, Ricardo Soriano Scholtz Von Hermensdorff, but the main founder of the town whether directly or indirectly was his nephew Alfonso von Hohenlohe, who purchased a “hacienda” in what would end up being one of the great icons of the town, The Marbella Club. The frontline beach plot of land that they purchased housed a spectacular villa where the family hosted their friends whilst visiting the new Spanish jewel (Marbella), the idea came to turn the house into an oasis for a select group of clientele. Since the beginning of the Marbella Club Hotel, with time the town grew and communities of houses and villas were established around it. The hotel has hosted a large variety of famous people from Royal families to movie stars and elite athletes. Undoubtedly we are talking about one of the most exclusive areas of the Costa del Sol and it is not easy to find properties available on the market for sale, as they become available the average starting price is around two million euros. Among the urbanizations that we will find in the area of The Marbella Club we find Las Torres, Santa Margarita and Santa Petronila.

Continuing with the history of the Golden Mile, Alfonso von Hohenlohe decided to continue creating his brand and after opening The Marbella Club decided to undertake a new project in 1974 and built The Puente Romano Hotel. The complex is named after an authentic Roman bridge belonging to Via Augusta, an ancient Roman road that linked Rome and Cadiz almost two thousand years ago. In 1979 finally after several conversations Mr. Mouaffak Al Midani, one of the most frequent clients of the Marbella Club acquired The Puente Romano Hotel. The Puente Romano Hotel guest book is also signed by well-known regular clients of The Marbella Club.

The services that both resorts offer include home catering, magnificent restaurants, tennis clubs (being host to several International Tournaments), special events such as concerts, inaugurations etc… The two unique jewels of luxury tourism in Marbella have changed hands through the years, but the brand and ambience that Alfonso Von Hohenlohe sought has been maintained throughout the years.

On The Golden Miles mountainside, several luxurious apartment complexes were developed on the foothills of ‘La Concha’ and above all magnificent villas surrounded by nature with spectacular views of the sea and the town. Cascada de Camojan and Sierra Blanca were consolidated as the star developments of the area managing to equal in value many of the (smaller in size) beachside luxury homes.

Considering the aforementioned, The Golden Mile is not only a desirable residential area, it has become a lifestyle and has begun to offer luxury boutiques and fabulous restaurants including ‘Villa Tiberio’ or ‘Pan y Mermelada’. In addition, nightclubs and luxury venues such as “Olivia Valére” have become a part of the Marbella nightlife, this wonderful location combines a restaurant, bar and nightclub along with a large clientele in its distinguished Moroccan style venue.

The Golden Mile continues to impress its visitors with its beaches and diverse entertainment options. Many secret places are to be found along the beaches and wonderful tropical landscaped areas that are included in The Golden Mile, if you haven’t visited yet why not plan a trip to come and discover them.
