Easter week in Marbella

‘Andalusia’ and ‘Easter Week’ are two words that go together beautifully, when spoken become more important and have achieved international recognition. It is one of the most important events of the year for the Andalusian community; therefore it is equally important in Marbella. The diverse church brotherhoods of the city made up by locals and neighbours give life to the tradition that annually commemorates the event of; passion, death and the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Therefore, it is a period of intense rituals within the various Christian traditions resulting in an intoxicating atmosphere. The processions sound through the Casco Antiguo (old town), Nueva Andalucía and San Pedro, people take delight in following the routes as in each Andalusian city and town, making it apparent that Marbella truly lives Easter Week with passion…

The main protagonists are always the religious floats with beautiful statues of saints and effigies, usually representing Christ or the Virgin Mary. The floats are elaborate in their design with use of gold and silver, dozens of flowers and candles. They weigh a lot; many people take pride in being chosen to carry them through the streets, on their journey. Nazarenes (or penitents) walk in front of the floats. They wear robes and sometimes cloaks and hoods, holding candles or crosses. They belong to the church brotherhoods that also guard the religious statues throughout the year. An ambience is created with live bands playing solemn music during the processions as they follow their route through the city.

When does it begin?

Easter Weeks date varies and changes from one year to another; it is not usually celebrated before March 22 nor after April 25 as it is associated with the first full moon after the March equinox. This year 2018 the date is from March 25 to April 01 2018.
